University Heights, Ohio – October 20, 2010 – The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team fell to John Carroll University with a score of 3-2.
Heidelberg battled hard with the Blue Streaks, who are tied for second in the OAC. The Berg’s two goals marked the first time this season that the Blue Streaks have given up multiple goals in conference play.
The Berg goes to 9-7 overall, 2-4 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks improves to 8-6-2, 5-1 in league play.
John Carroll’s Betsy Halgh recorded the first goal of the game in the 15th minute for her sixth score of the season.
The Blue Streaks would add two quick goals in the second half in the 50th and 54th minute, off the foot of Val Korb to give JCU a 3-0 lead.
Heidelberg created some momentum at the 60th minute mark when sophomore Michelle Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) made an excellent cross to junior Rachel Johann (Evansville, Ind. / Evansville Reitz) who would place the ball in the far corner of the net for the goal. It marked Johann’s second goal of the season.
Seven minutes later, freshman Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) scored, denting John Carroll’s lead to 3-2. Hogan now leads the team and the OAC with nine goals on the season. Sophomore Krista Blake (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) earned the assist.
Despite great effort, the Berg’s second half surge would not be enough to overcome the scoring deficit.
Heidelberg will finish the regular season with three-straight home games starting with Marietta College on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
