'Berg Ties with the Pioneers

Tiffin, Ohio – October 23, 2010 – Under the lights of Mayer Field, the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team tied with Marietta College with a score of 1-1.

The Berg goes to 9-7-1 overall, 2-4-1 in the OAC, while the Pioneers move to 2-12-3, 0-5-2 in conference play.

Heidelberg scored first in the 26th minute when freshman Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Marimont) headed the ball in the back of the net off a corner kick from senior Katie Klein (Milford, Ohio / Milford). It marked Hogan’s team-leading 10th goal of the season.

The Pioneers knotted things up in the second half when Danielle Staub scored in the 72nd minute off a cross from the near side of the field. Christina Tirpak was credited with the assist.

Neither team could find the go ahead score in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Heidelberg had a couple close calls including one in the first few minutes of the first overtime in which it thought it had the game winner. The referees would huddle and made the call that the ball touched the back of the net (out of bounds) before the shot occurred.

Heidelberg created opportunities in both overtimes, including outshooting Marietta 4-0, but couldn’t find the clincher which resulted in a tie.

For the game, the Berg outshot the Pioneers 18-8 and also out cornered Marietta 13-3.

Junior Kristen Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) had a game-leading three shots on goal.

Guarding the net for Heidelberg was freshman Brittany Labry (Aurora, Ohio / Twinsburg), who recorded three stops.

Heidelberg is back in action Tuesday (Oct. 26) as it hosts Ohio Northern University at 7:00 p.m.
