Tiffin, Ohio- The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team fought hard against the No. 2 OAC ranked Ohio Northern University, but fell short 2-1 in double overtime.
‘Berg drops 9-8-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the OAC, while the Polar Bears improve to 11-5-1, 6-1-1 in conference play.
Sophomore Krista Blake (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) put Heidelberg in the lead in the 27th minute with a backfoot shot to the near lower post. Junior Kristen Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) found Blake with a far cross. It marked Blake’s first goal of the season.
Ohio Northern’s Sami Atkinson knotted it 1-1 in the 33rd minute as she beat Heidelberg’s keeper to the near low post. Sandy Plunkett and Chelsea Albert were credited with the assist.
Neither team could find the back of the net during regulation, resulting in overtime.
In the second overtime, ONU’s Sami Atkinson scored her second goal of the game after the ball bounced around the box for the game winner.
Freshman Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) led Heidelberg with four shots on goal.
In the net for the Berg, freshman Brittany Labry (Aurora, Ohio / Twinsburg) gathered in a career-high 10 saves.
Heidelberg closes out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 30) as it hosts Wilmington College at 1:30 p.m.
