Heidelberg Women's Soccer Team Opens 2011 Home Schedule With Defiance

Senior Midfielder Kristen SchneiderTIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team will open its 2011 home schedule with a 7 p.m. match against Defiance College at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. Despite a touch three-match road trip to start the season, the Berg returns to Tiffin with a 1-2 record.

The season was scheduled to open at Adrian (Mich.) College on Saturday, Sept. 3, but when lightning postponed the game until Labor Day, Sept. 5, Heidelberg was forced to travel to Albion (Mich.) College, where it officially opened the season with a 2-1 win on Sunday, Sept. 4. The team then had to travel back to Adrian, then on to Grove City (Pa.) College, a trip that covered nearly 700 miles, and included a stop in Tiffin to resume classes Tuesday.

In the season opener, senior midfielder Kristen Schneider (Evendale/Mount Notre Dame) came through in the clutch when she broke a 1-1 tie in the 85th minute with what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Junior midfielder Makenzie Dunford (Ontario, Canada/Orangeville District Section), who scored the match’s first goal, provided the assist to Schneider.

Through three matches, Dunford and Schneider have accounted for all ‘Berg points through three games. Dunford has a team-high three points on one goal and one assist, while Schneider has two points on one goal.

In goal, sophomore Brittany Labry (Aurora/Twinsburg) and freshman Natalie Wolfe (Columbus/Madison Plains) have shared time in goal, with Labry making 10 saves and Wolfe seven.

Defiance is 1-2 and is led by Alicia Ledford and Katie Heitkamp, who each have scored a goal. Aileen Clouse will see most of the action in goal. Clouse has allowed eight goals and made 11 saves in nearly 250 minutes of action.

The Berg will play seven of its next 10 matches in the friendly confines of Tiffin, including four of the next six.
