TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team topped Defiance College, 2-0, tonight in its home opener at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. Scoring their first goals of the season were sophomore Aleseya Evans (Troy) and senior Jennifer Pfau (Lewis Center/Olentangy).
Heidelberg improves to 2-2, while Defiance falls to 1-3.
After a slow start to the second period, things picked up when a shot from around the 30-yard line of the football field at the 64 minute mark of the game by Evans brought the crowd to its feet. The Defiance defense put up a tough fight, but shortly after Evans returned for another try at a goal which was deflected. The deflection played an advantage for teammate Pfau who put a shot back in for the second goal of the night at the 70 minute mark.
“We have been preaching teamwork this season and tonight we came together,” said sixth-year head coach Nick Spell.
Heidelberg finished the game with 11 total shots, while Defiance finished with nine. Molly Schriber (Sidney) logged 90 minutes in goal for the Berg and finished with six saves.
The Berg is back on the road Wednesday, Sept. 14, to take on Wooster College (1-2). The match is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Wooster, Ohio.
