'Berg Women's Soccer Team Opens OAC Play With Loss at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio—Sophomore forward Aleseya Evans (Troy) scored two goals, but the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team fell to Capital University today, 4-3, in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener at Bernlohr Stadium in Bexley, Ohio. Senior midfielder Kristen Schneider (Evendale/Mount Notre Dame) also scored for the Berg.

Heidelberg falls to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the OAC. Capital improves to 4-5-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

Capital’s Tara Zimmer game the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with a cross from the left side from Kaylee Phillips.

Schneider tied the score, 1-1, in the 45th minute when she received a pass from freshman midfielder Rachel Gilbert (Chardon) and fired a shot from the top of the box to the upper-90 of the goal.

Evans provided the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute, giving ‘Berg a 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati/Mariemont) was credited with the assist after pushing a free kick to Evans, who was waiting near the penalty kick line.

Phillips tied the score at 2-2 in the 63rd minute and Hilary Ells gave Capital a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute with an assist from Zimmer. Zimmer then extended the Crusader lead to 4-2 in the 80th minute with her second goal of the day.

In the 81st minute, Evans took control of a loose ball off a corner kick and put it past goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan to start a Heidelberg rally, but the Capital defense did not allow the Berg another opportunity in the final nine minutes of play.

In goal, junior Molly Schriber (Sidney) played the first 68 minutes, making six saves while allowing three goals. Sophomore Brittany Labry (Aurora/Twinsburg) played the final 22 minutes, making four stops and allowing one score.
