Tiffin, OH – The Heidelberg women’s soccer team opened the 2012 season today against Case Western Reserve at Hidden Valley in Tiffin, Ohio. Despite their hard work, the Berg fell to the Spartans by a score of 3-0.
Freshman Shannon Angel (Hudson) recorded a shot on goal in her first collegiate start. Senior Bethany Mattern (Youngstown/Austintown Fitch) also tabbed one shot for the Berg.
Freshman goalkeeper Julie Cross (Bowling Green) tallied six saves in her first collegiate start.
After 32 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Jessie Sabers netted an unassisted goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Sabers collected her second goal of the evening in the 63rd minute off of a pass from Rachel Bourque, adding to the Spartan lead.
In the 71st minute, a Heidelberg own goal gave Case a 3-0 lead, which would stand for the remainder of the game.
"The team should keep their heads up," said seventh-year head coach Nick Spell. "Case is one of the best teams we'll play all season. We have some things to work on, but there were a lot of positives to take away from the contest."
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, as the Grove City College Wolverines head to Hidden Valley. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
