Defiance, OH – Head coach Nick Spell and the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team were still searching for their first victory of the 2012 season. Against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets, the Berg would play tough and keep the game at a scoreless tie until the last few minutes of the match. With three goals in the final ten minutes, Defiance defeated Heidelberg, 3-0.
Freshman Caitlyn Skrzypek (Brunswick) and sophomore Stephanie Crossman (Dayton/Bellbrook) led the Berg offensively with three shots each.
Sophomores Rachel Gilbert (Chardon) and Hannah Gregoire (Canton/Perry) along with junior Bethany Mattern (Youngstown/Austintown Fitch) and freshman Shannon Angel (Hudson) recorded one shot for the contest. The trio of Gilbert, Gregoire and Angel, all placed their shots on target.
Sophomore Christina Neal (Kingston, TN/Roane County) placed one of her two shots on goal for the Student Princes.
Freshman goalkeeper Julie Cross (Bowling Green) tallied five saves for the Berg. Her save total now stands at 36 for the season.
Cross would keep Defiance scoreless until the 83rd minute, when the Yellow Jackets found their first goal. The next two goals would come in the 84th and 86th minute to give Defiance a 3-0 victory at home.
The Heidelberg women will return to action on Tuesday, September 25, when they travel to Hiram, Ohio to take on the Terriers of Hiram College under the lights. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
