'Berg Shuts Down Redwomen Offense for a Win 1-0
Off an assist from senior Kelly Mueller (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) in the 19th minute of play, freshman Katelyn McBeath (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) was able to find the back of the net and score the gaming winning goal for Heidelberg College. It was McBeath’s fourth goal of the season and it helped raise the women’s soccer team’s record to 2-6 on the year.
Overall on the day, the Berg managed to out shoot Rio Grande College 26-6 and racked up a season high seven corner kicks. Freshman Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) led the offense with seven shots, three of which were on goal. Junior Ivy Thompson (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) followed close behind with six shots and two on goal, while McBeath totaled five shots, all of which were on goal.
It was an aggressive game on both sides, with 29 overall fouls being called. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Cathoic) earned the shutout for Heidelberg and totaled three saves as she guarded the net for the entire contest.
The women return to action Wednesday Sept. 26 at Defiance, with start time set at 4:00p.m.
