Seniors Leave on a High Note

The Heidelberg College women’s soccer team defeated Mount Union College 1-0 on Senior Day at Mayer Field. Heidelberg concludes the 2007 regular season with an overall record of 5-13 and a 3-6 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders fall to 3-13-2 overall and 0-8-1 in league action.

Heidelberg and Mount Union played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of action. In the first half, Mount Union out shot the Berg 11-5, but sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) kept the Purple Raiders in check with seven saves.     

Junior Ivy Thompson (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) put Heidelberg on the scoreboard with the eventual game-winning goal in the 57th minute on a shot from the center of the box. Melissa Hamons (Northwood, Ohio / Central Catholic) assisted on the goal. The Thompson goal was her first on the year, while Hamons picked up her second assist.

For the game Mount Union led the way in shots at 16-6 and in corner kicks at 4-2. Sweeney earned the win in goal, finishing with 12 saves on the day.

Prior to the start of the game, Heidelberg recognized seniors Kelly Mueller (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Tara Kirsch (Parma, Ohio / Normandy), who were playing in their final game at Mayer Field. Kirsch picked up two shots on the day.
