'Berg Keeps Streak Alive
The Heidelberg women’s soccer team kept their streak alive with a 2-2 tie in double overtime against Geneva College. The Berg has not lost a game in its last five outings, raising its record to 4-2-2. Geneva currently stands at 3-2-2 for the year.
It was the fourth time this year and third-straight contest that Heidelberg has taken into overtime. The women hold a record of 2-0-2 after regulation play has commenced.
“We started out slow, but found our rhythm,” commented head coach Nick Spell, “Katelyn McBeath (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) really stepped it up for us today, while Geneva’s keeper did a good job in front of the net.”
McBeath scored both goals for the Berg. The first came during the 28th minute of play off a penalty kick and tied the game at one apiece before the signaling of the half. Then, in the 60th minute, McBeath received an assist from teammate Ann Washington (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) and knocked in another goal to tie the game once again, this time at 2-2.
Rebecca Shaw scored the first goal for Geneva 14 minutes into the game, while Kelsey Anderson netted the second one just short of two minutes into the second half. Anderson led the Golden Tornados with four shots, all of which were on goal. Her teammate Amanda Munsch contributed four shots as well, two on goal.
Overall, Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) led the Berg with six shots, two of which were on goal, while McBeath finished with a total of three, with two being on goal.
In the net, Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio/ Elyria Catholic) snagged seven saves for Heidelberg and Lauren Londino racked up nine for Geneva. Londino’s total included two back to back in the last minute of play. Katherine Ward (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) ricocheted one off Londino’s hands back at Ivy Thompson (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) who forced Londino to do a full lay out in the opposite direction for the save and the tie.
Heidelberg returns to action on Tuesday, September 23, at 7 p.m. in a home contest against Defiance College.
