John Carroll Defeats the Berg
After a slow first half, John Carroll University’s feet came alive and the Blue Streaks pulled off a 3-1 victory over the visiting Heidelberg women’s soccer team. Heidelberg now stands at 4-6-3 overall, 0-2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, JCU holds a record of 9-2-3 for the year, 2-1-1 in the conference.
Caitlin Walton knocked in the first goal of the day for the Blue Streaks on a corner kick at the 48:04 mark and was followed by Erika Eberhardt at the 76:14 mark when Eberhardt booted one in off an assist from Brynn McNicholas.
Heidelberg finally scored a goal of its own just after the 83rd minute. After receiving a rebound from a corner, Emily Riggs (Armada, Mich. / Armada) pounded a shot from about 20 yards out through about six defenders for her first collegiate goal. Unfortunately the Berg’s hopes for a comeback were short lived when McNicholas posted the third goal of the day for JCU on the scoreboard during a corner kick in the 88th minute.
In goal, Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) snatched up six saves for the Berg, bringing her season total to 106. For John Carroll, Michelle Zrebic picked up three saves during the game.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, October 18, in Westerville, Ohio where the team will face no. 25 Otterbein College in a 2 p.m. match-up.
