Lions Strike Late to Top Heidelberg

Tiffin, Ohio – September 9, 2009 – Heidelberg University and Mount St. Joseph College combined to score four goals in the first 30 minutes of action, but the Lions sneaked one to the back of the net late in the game to take home a 3-2 victory in women’s soccer action at Mayer Field, on the campus of Heidelberg. The win improves MSJ to 1-2 on the year, while the Berg stands at 0-3.
 
Mount St. Joseph scored in the 12th minute, but Heidelberg’s Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) remedied the deficit with her first goal of the year in the 25th minute.
 
In the 26th minute, Mackenzie Dunford (Ontario, Canada / Orangeville District Section) found Cori-Ann Brown (Columbus, Ohio / Olentangy) at the top of box to give Heidelberg advantage of the scoreboard at 2-1. Brown’s goal was her first collegiate score.
 
With just over 10 minutes to play in the opening half, Mount St. Joseph knotted the score for the second time of the contest following a goal by Andrea Caldwell.
 
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 until Caldwell scored her second goal of the night in the 85th minute to give the visiting Lions the eventual win.
 
Mount St. Joseph held a 21-11 advantage in shots, as well as a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. In her first game in net for the Berg in 2009, Katelyn McBeath (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) picked up nine saves.
 
Brown led Heidelberg with two shots on goal, while Gross, Dunford, Kristen Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) and Heather Jones (Newark, Ohio / Newark) each had one.
