Quick Start Plays Dividends

Tiffin, Ohio – September 15, 2009 – Two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game led the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team, and fourth-year head coach Nick Spell, to a 2-0 victory over La Roche College tonight at Mayer Field, on the campus of Heidelberg. The win improves Heidelberg to 1-3-1 on the year, while the Redhawks fall to 3-2.
 
Heidelberg dominated from the start of the contest. Rachel Johann (Evansville, Ind. / Evansville Reitz) dribbled the ball down the right side of the field and hit a cross that was deflected by Jennifer Pfau (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) and eventually found the back of the net off the foot of Krista Blake (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva). Blake scored her second goal of the season in the sixth minute to give the Berg an early 1-0 advantage.
 
The Berg doubled its lead in the 10th minute when Makenzie Dunford (Ontario, Canada / Orangeville District Section) had wide shot  from the right side fall behind the goalkeeper for a goal. Dunford’s goal was the first of her collegiate career.
 
For the game, Heidelberg and La Roche played an even contest in shots with 10 apiece. The Redhawks held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Trisha Meier (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston), Cori-Ann Brown (Columbus, Ohio / Olentangy), Katelyn McBeath (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard), Katharine Ward (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) andRaquel Stoltzfus (Bellefontaine, Ohio / Bellefontaine) joined Blake and Dunford with shots on goal in the vicotry.
 
Senior Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) and freshman Molly Schriber (Sidney, Ohio / Sidney) split time in goal for Heidelberg. Sweeney got the start and picked up one save, while Schriber took over in the second half and had a career-high eight saves.
 
Heidelberg returns to action at Kenyon College Sept. 19. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
