Heidelberg Falters on Day Two of Rebel Spring Games

Luck was just not on its side today as the Heidelberg College softball team dropped both of their games in the second day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Berg lost first to Anderson, 5-0, and then to Rhode Island, 9-2, falling to 1-3 on the year.

Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) kept Anderson to only five hits on the day, but at the same time saw five runners cross the plate for a 5-0 loss at the start of play this afternoon. Heidelberg only managed to make connection with the ball five times, Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) and Dessiree Burtch (Prospect, Ohio / Elgin) hit 2 apiece with Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) smashing a triple. Defensively, Price recorded seven put outs at short, while Foust tossed out three assists.

Four of Anderson’s five runs came in the first inning, with the last one being posted in the third. Bachman drops to 0-2 on the season.

In the second game, Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) led the team by going 4-for-4 with one RBI, but Heidelberg’s total eight hits just were not enough. Kella Lange (Medina, Ohio / Medina) pinch hit for Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio / Firelands) in the sixth inning and hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Heidelberg’s second run of the game. Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) led the team with eight put outs at first base, while Price contributed four assists from shortstop.

Rhode Island racked up 14 hits against pitcher Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora), and knocked in five runs in the last two innings to secure the win. Allenspach stands at 1-1 so far this year.

The Berg continues in the tournament tomorrow, March 12, at 9 a.m. against Husson and at 11 a.m. against Defiance.
