The Berg Finishes Day Three in Florida

It was a day filled with tough losses for the Heidelberg College softball team. The team lost to Defiance 5-3 in an early morning match up, then fell to Husson 4-2 in the afternoon. The Berg falls to 1-5 on the season, but still has one day of competition left at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. to hopefully make up some ground.

In game one of the day, Defiance scored first in the second inning, followed two two-run innings in the fourth and fifth. Heidelberg closed the gap in the top of the six with a three-run jaunt, but stopped just short of overcoming the deficit set by the Yellow Jackets.

While the bats were hot during the sixth, Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio / Firelands) and Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) both singled up the middle for an RBI each, while Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) reached first on a catching error by the first baseman from a throw from shortstop which helped drive Kendeigh into home for Heidelberg’s third run of the game. Overall, Price went 2-for-4 at the plate and Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa Gladorf) went 2-for-2. Defensively, catcher Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) led the team with seven put outs, while pitcher Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) received the loss.

Against Husson, Heidelberg jumped out to an early lead in the first with Foust crossing the plate just before Curry became the third out on attempt for a triple. Husson answered back in the second with a run, while the Berg pulled ahead once more in the third after Foust scored against off a single to right field by Gerdeman. Unfortunately, Husson came back to score two unanswered runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to clinch the win.

Pitcher Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) suffered the loss for the Berg, while Price and catcher Nikki Langendyk (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy) led the defense with five put outs apiece. Meanwhile, Gerdeman went 2-for-3 at the plate and picked up an RBI.

The Berg finishes the tournament tomorrow, March 13, at 3 p.m. against Ramapo and at 5 p.m. against Simpson.
