Final Day Ends in a Split for the Berg
The Heidelberg College softball team wrapped up its fourth and final day of play at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. with a victory over Simpson (4-1) and a loss to no. 20 Ramapo (5-0). Overall at the games and for the season, Heidelberg stands at 2-6.
In the first game of the day with only 15 minutes of warm up after a scheduling mix up, Heidelberg started off strong and scored all four of its runs in the first inning. Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) led off with a bunt and reached first, then was moved to second after Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) bunted and had the throw botched by Simpson’s catcher. With two runners waiting on the bases and one out, Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) singled to right center, moved Sweetnich up to third and grabbed an RBI as Price crossed the plate. Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa Gladorf) got to first next by way of a walk, leaving the bases loaded for Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush). Killoran knocked a double to right field and cleared the bases for three RBIs. Simpson would not answer with its only run until the fourth inning.
Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) was on the mound and earned the win for the Berg, her second of the season. She kept Simpson to three hits and struck out five. Gerdeman recorded eight put outs, while Price and Killoran supplied three assists apiece. Offensively, Price went 2-for-3, while Killoran’s double was the lone extra base hit by either side.
Against Ramapo, Heidelberg’s offense hit a slide, with the Roadrunners’ Buehler and Camp combining for a one- hitter against the Berg. The Roadrunners scored three runs in the first before Allenspach came in as relief for Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) on the mound. Two more runs crossed the plate for Ramapo in the third inning. Price nabbed the only hit of the game for the Berg with a single through the left side in the sixth.
Defensively, Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) led the team with five put outs, while Price racked up three assists. Allenspach notched three more strike outs and only walked one batter to complete the game.
Heidelberg suits up again on March 25 at Denison in Granville, Ohio at 3:30 p.m.
