Denison Sweeps the Berg
With scores of 9-0 and 5-3, Denison slipped by the Heidelberg College softball team and won the double-header in Granville, Ohio. Overall, the Big Red rises to 9-1 and the Berg falls to 2-8 for the year.
In the first game of the day, with Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) on the mound for Heidelberg, Denison scored its first run early in the first when designated hitter Brie Berkopec hit a double to drive in first baseman Erica Evans who had reached first on a fielder’s choice. The Berg quickly recovered, however, and held the Big Red scoreless unless until the fifth. Denison went on to score four runs in the fifth, as well as four more in the sixth for the win.
The second game saw Heidelberg score first, when shortstop Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) scored on an error by the shortstop in the first inning. The second inning brought another run for the Berg when designated hitter Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) crossed the plate after a double by Price. Heidelberg drove in their third and final run in the third when third baseman Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) was hit in by a single from pinch hitter Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa Glandorf).
Denison finally answered back in the bottom of the third with three runs to tie the game, and went ahead in the fifth when two unearned runs crossed the plate. Freshman ’Berg pitcher Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) picked up her fifth loss of the season, but allowed only three hits.
Price led the Berg for the day with five assists, while catcher/first baseman Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) posted 13 put outs. Price also got three hits with a double for the Berg’s lone extra base hit of the day.
Heidelberg suits up next against no. 23 Muskingum College for the Berg’s home opener on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
