Heidelberg Drops Two
Despite scoring 14 runs in two games, the Heidelberg College softball team dropped two games to Baldwin-Wallace College, 12-7 and 12-7. The Berg now stands at 4-18 on the year, 2-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. B-W rises to 11-13 for the season, 2-6 in the OAC as well.
The first game began with B-W jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Heidelberg quickly countered and went ahead 2-1. The Yellow Jackets found their bats in the second, however, and recorded a six-run inning. The Berg reacted by scoring two more to stay in the game, but B-W would hold on until the seventh and score five more in the next three innings to take the game. Heidelberg managed to plate one more in the fourth and two in the fifth. Neither team scored in the sixth and seventh innings.
For Heidelberg, both Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) and Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run. Price also drove in an RBI in the fifth. Jen Kerman (Willowick, Ohio / Regina) went 2-for-3, also recording one run and one RBI.
Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) suffered the loss on the mound for the Berg. She struck out five and walked one.
In the second game, Heidelberg held a 2-1 lead until the fourth inning when B-W posted another six-run inning. Heidelberg answered back in the bottom of the inning with three run, but the Yellow Jackets had another big inning in the top of the fifth and scored four more. B-W scored one more in the sixth, while the Berg managed to cross one over the plate in the fifth and one more in the sixth thanks to a shot by Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) over the fence in left center.
Foust led the Berg at the plate for the game, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, one run, a double, and her homer. Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, one run, and a triple down the leftfield line in the first.
Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) pitched 3.1 innings for Heidelberg and picked up the loss. She struck out two and allowed two hits. Allenspach came in as relief for 3.2 innings. She also struck out two, allowed four hits, and walked three.
Defensively, Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) recorded 14 put outs at first base, while Price and Dessiree Burtch (Prospect, Ohio / Elgin) contributed four assists apiece from shortstop and second base respectively.
The Berg suits up next on Saturday, April 12, against Capital University in Bexley, Ohio. The first game of the OAC doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
