Findlay Blanks the Berg

The Heidelberg College softball team fell 4-0, 4-0 to Div. II Findlay University in the team’s last home stand of the season. Heidelberg drops to 7-29 overall, while Findlay rises to 11-30.

In the first game, Findlay scored two runs in both the second and third innings, but did not need to plate anymore to take the game. Freshman lefty Lauren Orban held the Berg to only four hits and walked one to earn the win. On the mound for Heidelberg, Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) struck out seven and allowed only two earned runs to cross the plate. Getting hits for the Berg were Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union), Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Heights, Ohio/ Garfield Heights), Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora), and Allenspach.

The second game had the Oilers plating one run in both the first and second innings. In the fifth, Kara Hochevar doubled to left center for a RBI and was followed by Jessica Rolston at the plate. Rolston singled down the left field line for Findlay’s fourth and final run of the contest.

Jenna Binz held Heidelberg to three hits and struck out 13 for the win. Meanwhile for the Berg, Nicole Bachman (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) picked up the loss after having tossed 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. Sweetnich came in as relief a third of the way into the fifth inning. She allowed only two hits, walked one, and did not give up any earned runs. Price, Foust, and Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio/ Buckeye Valley) posted the only hits of the game for the Berg.

Defensively, Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio/ Ottawa-Glandorf) recorded 23 putouts while covering first, while Price added in eight assists.

Heidelberg suits up for its final doubleheader of the season tomorrow, April 30, in South Euclid, Ohio where the team will take on Notre Dame College at 3 p.m.
