Notre Dame Sweeps the Berg as Season Ends
The Heidelberg College softball team ended its 2008 campaign with two losses to Notre Dame College, 3-2, 12-4 (5). Heidelberg ends the season 7-31 overall, while the Falcons stand at 25-11.
The first game began with the Berg scoring first in the second inning when Jen Kerman (Willowick, Ohio / Regina) grounded out to third and Dessiree Burtch (Prospect, Ohio / Elgin) sprinted in across the plate. Notre Dame posted a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth, but Heidelberg soon countered in the top of the fifth to take back the lead. For that run, Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) singled to left and Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) scored, unearned. The Falcons went on to score twice more in the sixth, however, to take the game as the Berg just could not muster up any more runs.
Price, Foust, and Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) posted the only three hits of the game for the Berg, with Price snagging extra bases with her double in the fifth. Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) was on the mound and picked up the loss for Heidelberg. She allowed two earned runs and struck out four in six innings of work.
During the second game, Heidelberg once again scored first when another single by Foust to left drove Price across the plate yet again. Unfortunately, Notre Dame went onto score eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding lead. Heidelberg attempted a comeback with two runs in the third, but was quickly shut down when the Falcons scored four more to close out the inning. Heidelberg managed to score one more in the fifth, but it was too little too late.
Price went 3-for-3 during the contest at the plate, recording two runs as well. Foust contributed two runs and two RBIs while going 2-for-2. Both also ripped doubles for Heidelberg’s only extra base hits of the game. Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Heights, Ohio/ Garfield Heights) started her second game of the year for the Berg and received the loss. She struck out two and walked two in three innings of work. Kella Lange (Medina, Ohio / Medina) made her second appearance as relief on the mound for the season. She threw one inning and did not allow any runs.
Defensively, Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) led the team with eight putouts, while Price and Killoran contributed three assists.
