'Berg Suffers Two Setbacks on Day Two at Rebel Games

The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Betsy Hada, suffered two setbacks on day two at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In game one, the Berg fell 5-3 to Augustana (Ill.) and in game two suffered a 7-0 loss to Catholic University of America.

Against Augustana, the Berg trailed 2-0 after three innings. Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) and Sami Lindsey (Bakersfield, Calif. / North) reached base on a single to set the stage for Katharine Whittaker (Buford, Ga. / Buford). Whittaker stepped to the plate and connected with an inside pitch and sent it over the left field fence for her first career home run and gave the Berg a 3-2 lead.

Augustana held the Berg scoreless for the remainder of the game, while plating two runs, including the eventual game-winning run, in the fifth, and added an insurance run in its last at bat.

At the plate, Lindsey went 2-for-3 to lead the Berg. Making her first appearance on the mound was Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands). She earned the start and threw 4.1 innings, striking out three, while giving up seven hits. Throwing the final 2.2 innings and suffering the loss was Jessica Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands).

Against Catholic University, Heidelberg has four players pick up hits, including Brittany Winter (Ida, Mich. / Ida), Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush), Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) and Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora), but could not cross home plate.

Allenspach pitched five complete innings and picked up the loss on the mound.

Heidelberg returns to action tomorrow versus Walsh and Saint Benedict. Games are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
