'Berg Closes Trip Down South Victorious
The Heidelberg University softball team closed it trip south with an 8-0 victory over Husson College in six innings. Heidelberg concluded its play in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. with an overall record of 2-8.
In the win over Husson, the Berg took a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio / Firelands), Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Oho / Hopewell-Loudon) and Briana Hinz (Madison, Ohio / Madison) started things off with singles to load the bases. Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) grounded out to shortstop, scoring Kendeigh and Reinhart rounded the bases to score on a passed ball. Sami Lindsey (Bakersfield, Calif. / North) knocked in Hinz and the Berg scoring was complete with a Katharine Whittaker (Buford, Ga. / Buford) RBI double that sent Lindsey across home plate.
Heidelberg added another run in the fifth off a Reinhart double to score Whittaker. Whittaker led the inning off with a single.
The Berg closed out the game in the sixth inning. Thoms reached base on a single and rounded the base path to score off a Whittaker hit. Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) followed Whittaker at the plate and sent a line drive over the fence in center field to push the final score to 8-0.
Hinz pitched a three-hit shutout to earn the win on the mound. In six innings she struck out four. The win improved her season record to 2-0.
Offensively, Reinhart went 3-for-3 with a double. Whittaker finished with three hits in four at bats, while Killoran, Hinz and Thoms had a hit apiece.
Heidelberg, under the guidance of first-year head coach Betsy Hada, returns to action March 19 at Alma. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
