Heidelberg softball drops doubleheader to Alma
The Heidelberg University softball team suffered a doubleheader setback at Alma College today. Alma posted an 8-0 win in five innings in game one and held on for a 5-4 win in the night cap. Following the doubleheader, Alma improves to 8-5 while Heidelberg is now 2-10.
In game one, Alma jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of action and never looked back. Heidelberg only registered three hits in the contest compared to nine by Alma. Picking up the hits for the Berg was Katharine Whittaker (Buford, Ga. / Buford), Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottwaw-Glandorf), and Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon).
Suffering the loss on the mound was Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands). She pitched 3.2 innings and gave up nine hits while striking out two.
In game two, the Berg broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the third. Kella Lange (Medina, Ohio / Medina) led the inning off with a double to right center. Sami Lindsey (Bakersfield, Calif. / North) stepped up to the plate and knocked in Lange on a RBI single. Lindsey eventually scored on a Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) sacrifice fly to left field.
Alma responded in the bottom half of the third inning with two runs of their own to tie up the game, 2-2 and went on to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Heidelberg stood strong, coming back with two runs in the sixth to pull within a run at 5-4. Knocking in runs for the Berg were Briana Hinz (Madison, Ohio / Madison) and Lange.
In its final bat Heidelberg had the go ahead run on the base path but could not score, suffering the loss.
For the game Heidelberg and Alma each finished with 10 hits apiece. Leading the offense for the Berg was Whittaker, Killoran, and Lange with 2-for-3 outings. Finishing 2-for-4 was Lindsey. Suffering the loss on the mound was Hinz. In 6.0 innings of work Hinz gave up 10 hits and struck out one.
Heidelberg returns to action Saturday, March 21 at Defiance College. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
