Bluffton Sweeps the Berg
With scores of 10-1 and 9-5, Bluffton University swept a doubleheader from the Heidelberg University softball team today at Mayer Field. Heidelberg drops to 4-18 on the year, while Bluffton stands at 20-8.
In game one, Bluffton scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio/ Brush) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first, for Heidelberg’s only run of the game. The Beavers scored four more runs in the fifth inning and one each in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game 10-1.
Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) took the loss on the mound for the Berg. During the contest she gave up 10 hits and struck out one.
In the nightcap, Bluffton held a 5-0 lead after three at bats, but the Berg responded in the bottom half of the third. Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) belted a three run homerun, pulling the Berg within two, 5-3. Kella Lange (Medina, Ohio/ Medina) followed Reinhart with a single and scored on a Killoran double to cut the Berg deficit to one.
In the bottom of the fourth, Allenspach had an RBI single to center field, bringing Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio/ Firelands) home. Bluffton scored a run in the fifth and was able to plate two more runs in the sixth to win the game, 9-5.
Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio/ Firelands) lost the game on the mound. She gave up four hits and struck out one.
Lange led the Berg for the day going 3-for-5, while Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio/ Ottawa-Glandorf) led the way in the field with seven putouts.
Heidelberg suits up next against Capital University in Columbus, Ohio April 10, at 1:00 p.m.
