Softball Falls on Senior Day
The Heidelberg University softball team suffered a doubleheader setback to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Mount Union College today at Mayer Field, on the campus of Heidelberg. The Purple Raiders won game on 3-1 and posted an 8-0 win in six innings in game two. The win improves Mount Union to 26-14 overall and 12-6 in the OAC, while the Berg stands at 5-29 and 3-15.
Prior to the start of the doubleheader, Heidelberg recognized its 2009 seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the course of the last four years. Graduating from the team this year is Ashley Cornell (Lansing, Ill. / Thornton Fractional South), Katie Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora), Jennifer Kerman (Eastlake, Ohio / Regina), Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) and Jessica Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands).
In game one, Mount Union’s Meghan Simons belted a three-run home run in the first inning and Heidelberg’s Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio / Firelands) knocked in Kella Lange (Medina, Ohio / Medina) on a double down the left field line in the second inning for the lone scoring in the ballgame.
Heidelberg finished with just three hits in the game. Allenspach held the Purple Raiders to just five hits, while striking out two.
In game two, Mount Union had a 2-0 lead after four innings of action, but plated four runs in the fifth to extend its lead to six. Mount Union tacked on two more runs in the sixth to end the game in the sixth inning.
Mount Union finished with 15 hits compared to just five by the Berg. Leading the way with two hits was Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf).
