Alumni Game to Cap Off Fall Ball Season
The Heidelberg softball team, led by first-year head coach and 2001 'Berg alumnus Betsy Hada will cap off its fall ball season with a friendly game against alumni of the program. The game will take place on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m. on Mayer Field. It will be the first year since she graduated that Hada will not be commanding the mound for the 'Berg Alumni squad, but she is receiving warm wishes in her new role from her former teammates.
"The alumni look forward to helping one of our own, coach Hada, represent the Heidelberg community and believe she will be a tremendous asset to the program," commented Jadie Wheeler '99. Wheeler has volunteered to help organize and captain the alumni team now that Hada has switched dugouts, "It is always a great time of the year when the softball alumni get to dust off the gloves, warm up the old bones, and start swinging the bats," she added.
The game is a good chance for the current players to mingle with players past and rejuvenate their sense of what it is to play softball at the Berg. Stories will no doubt be shared about the pride and traditions that come along with the opportunity to wear the red, orange, and black.
"The alumni always look forward to a challenging game and the excitement the action brings to the crowd and current players, as they build their confidence for the upcoming season," stated Wheeler, "No matter what talent each one of us brings to the field, we take pride in helping the current players reach the goals they have set for themselves."
After the game, eight 'Berg softball players along with other spring athletes will be honored at half time during the Heidelberg football game versus Otterbein College with Heidelberg Scholar-Athlete Awards, made possible by the William E. Landess Fund. The football game begins at 7p.m. at Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
