You Always Have a Home at the Berg
At Heidelberg College, the softball team provides student-athletes with a four-year collegiate experience where the focus is not only on improving one's skills on the field, but one's mind and self as well off the field. More than a team, the program is rather an extended family, stretching from today's squad all the way back to the intramural teams of the past. This was made obvious by the show of support at the team's annual alumni game, held on Saturday, October 4.
While spectators packed on the hill behind the backstop looked on,15 alumni faced off against the current 'Berg squad in an 11-inning battle that ended with Heidelberg, under the direction of new head coach and 2001 alumnus Betsy Hada, winning 4-3 over their predecessors.
"Regardless of the outcome, we were all just so excited to come back and get dirty one more time on Mayer Field," commented alumni team captain Jadie Wheeler '99, "Especially with [past coaches] Jim Miccichi, Dick Rochester, and Missy Roggow coming back to join us in the dugout, it really felt like coming home for many of the alumni."
Coach Hada and the current team would like to extend their gratitude to the alumni that attended, including Amy Richards-Chamberlin, Mandy Coffman, Becky Shroyer-McClelland, Sue Oliver-Mehallick, Christina Stump-Estes, Wheeler, Stephanie Taylor, Ariane Lucas-Burkhart, Carisa Frysinger, Katie Fazekas, Jenny Coletta, Rachael Everhart, Ashley Foust, and Nikki Lagendyk, as well as the former coaches. They all truly embody what it is to be involved with softball at the Berg and the pride and traditions that come along with the opportunity to wear the red, orange, and black.
