The winningest head coach in Heidelberg tennis history, Jerry McDonald is in his third year as both the men’s and women’s head coach, but has oversaw the men’s program for the last 19 years. 
 
McDonald has served the Heidelberg athletic department in a variety of capacities over the last 23 years. He spent 19 seasons (1984-2002) as an assistant football coach including 17 as the offensive coordinator. During that span, the Berg offense broke numerous school and Ohio Athletic Conference records which still stand today. Throughout his tenure he has served as head baseball coach for two seasons (1985-86), was an assistant men's basketball coach for two years (1987-88) and most recently served as the Director of Athletics from 2002-2007.
 
McDonald is also the chairman of the health and physical education department. In that role he has been involved in redesigning the major and gaining state approval of the department’s teacher licensure program. In addition, he has designed the new sports management major.

 
A 1976 graduate of Heidelberg College, McDonald was a three-sport letterman in football, baseball and basketball and was a member of the 1972 Stagg Bowl championship football team. He received his master’s degree in 1986 from Bowling Green State University in Athletic Administration.
 
Prior to his return to Heidelberg in 1984, McDonald was a teacher and coach at Mansfield Madison and Hebron Lakewood High Schools.  He is a native of Springfield, Ohio, and a 1972 graduate of Shawnee High School.
 

Nicholas Spell

Nicholas Spell is in his second season as the assistant coach for the women's tennis team at Heidelberg and as the head women's soccer coach as well.

Prior to Heidelberg, Spell served as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at OAC member Marietta College. Spell attended Marietta and played four years of varsity soccer. He served as team captain and was the Pioneer’s Most Valuable Player in both 2002 and 2003. Spell completed his undergraduate studies in the spring of 2003 with a bachelor of arts in marketing. In the spring of 2005, he also received his masters of education from his alma mater.
