The Heidelberg University women’s tennis team, under the direction of veteran head coach Jerry McDonald, opened Ohio Athletic Conference competition against the Crusaders of Capital University on Saturday, March 23 at the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington, Ohio.
The match, which was originally scheduled to be played at the Heidelberg University Tennis Courts was relocated due to inclement weather.
Despite the Student Princes taking the first three singles matches from Capital, the Crusaders roared back to win the match, 5-4.
With the loss, the Heidelberg women fall to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
The Student Princes were led by the efforts of Katie Strahan (West Chester/Lakota East), who competed in the number one position. Strahan shutout her singles opponent Julie Lucas in straight sets, 6-0; 6-0 before teaming up with Sofey Fugate (Cincinnati/Lakota East) in doubles action.
The Lakota East duo took down their CU counterparts 8-4 in doubles action.
Fugate collected her own singles victory with a 6-4; 6-1 routing of Capital’s number two, Ashlin Gable.
The final singles victory for the Berg came from sophomore Sara Potts (Clyde). Potts occupied the number three position for the Student Princes and downed her opponent, 6-1; 6-0.
The Heidelberg women will return to the court on Tuesday, March 26. The Berg will continue OAC competition and battle the Quakers of Wilmington College at 3:30 p.m. at the Heidelberg University Tennis Courts in Tiffin, Ohio.
