The Heidelberg University women’s tennis team battled the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University in their final Ohio Athletic Conference matchup of the season on Saturday, April 27. The Blue Streaks dealt the Student Princes (4-13, 3-6 OAC) a 6-3 loss in the OAC finale.
Freshman Sofey Fugate (Cincinnati/Lakota East) had a productive day for the Berg, as she was one of two Student Princes to win in singles action. Fugate handed her JCU counterpart a loss in a third set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 7-0 (6-2).
Fugate teamed up with junior Katie Strahan (West Chester/Lakota East) in doubles competition to claim the lone doubles victory for the Berg. The duo dropped their Blue Streak opponents, 8-1.
The tandem finishes the OAC schedule with a team-best doubles record of 5-3. In her first year, Fugate finished with an overall record of 10-5, which is a team-best. She finished 4-4 in the OAC.
The only other Berg victory against John Carroll came in the number six singles matchup. Melissa Lovati (St. Clair Shores, MI/Lakeview) downed her opponent, 6-1, 6-4.
