Women’s Tennis Closes Regular Season Saturday at JCU

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s tennis team will close the regular season Saturday when it faces John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference match in University Heights, Ohio.

Heidelberg (5-9, 3-4 OAC) is coming off a 6-0 loss Wednesday to Otterbein University in a rain-suspended match.

Freshman Katie Strahan (West Chester/Lakota East) leads the team in singles play with an 8-5 overall and 4-2 OAC record. Senior Kayla Gerber (Clyde) and sophomore Deidre Potter (Chillicothe) have posted the team’s best doubles record at 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the OAC.

JCU (10-3, 5-1 OAC) has won five straight matches heading into today’s match with Marietta College. Tracy Gibson and Cassie Simmelink lead the Blue Streaks in singles play. Gibson is 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAC, while Simmelink is 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. Maria Ciccolini and Simmelink own a team-best 7-3 overall doubles record and are 3-1 in league play.

Following Saturday’s match, Heidelberg play in the first round (quarterfinals) of the 2012 OAC Women’s Tennis Tournament on May 1. The eight-team bracket will be held on campus sites on May 1 before moving to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason for the semifinals and finals rounds.
