'Berg Picks Up Another OAC Victory
The Heidelberg University women's tennis team swept doubles play and won five singles matches in straight sets en route to an 8-1 victory over host Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference match. The win is the second-striaght for the Berg who improves to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the OAC. The Crusaders fall to 1-13 and 1-7.
Amanda Hanning (Galion, Ohio / Galion) and Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) stepped up thier play at first doubles and held on for a 9-8 (3-0) victory to get things started for Heidelberg. At second doubles, Elizabeth Kurtzman (Mansfield, Ohio / Shelby) and Emily Naugle (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) posted an 8-3 victory as did Kayla Gerber (Clyde, Ohio / Clyde) and Darcy Young (Green Springs, Ohio / Clyde) at third doubles.
Capital picked up a point at first singles to halt Heidelberg's quick start. However, the Crusaders would not produce another point, as the Berg swept the second through sixth singles spots for the win. Kurtzman and Gerber blanked their opponents at second and fourth singles, respectively.
Taking a 6-2, 6-3 win in the third singles spot was Naugle, as Harrigan followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles. Rounding out the scoring for the Berg was Young with a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
Heidelberg closes out its 2009 regular season home schedule Thursday, April 23 with Otterbein College and Saturday, April 25 against Mount Union College.
