The Heidelberg University men’s and women’s track and field team finished their 2012-13 indoor season and migrated outdoors for the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. Competition began on Thursday, March 14 and concluded on the evening of the 15th.
The Shamrock Invite feature many Division I programs such as the Ohio State University, host Coastal Carolina University, the University of South Carolina, Murray State and more but the Berg still managed to show well for a smaller program among collegiate giants.
Leading the Berg women at the Shamrock Invite was senior sprinter/jumper Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway). Bevington leaped 5.14 meters (17-09.00) in the women’s long jump, earning fourth place in a field of 41 competitors. Marian also competed in the women’s 110-meter hurdles where she clocked a time of 16.31.
Freshman thrower Mary Beth Boyden (Somerset/Sheridan) had a respectable outing in South Carolina, throwing 12.01 meters (39-05.00) in the women’s shot put. The heave was enough for 22nd place.
Sophomore thrower Ally Blum (Galion/Northmoor) opened the 2013 outdoor season with a top 25 finish in the women’s javelin. Blum threw 38.46 meters (126-02) on her final attempt after fouling on her first two tries.
2013 NCAA Division III Indoor High Jump National Champion, Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) competed in the first outdoor contest of the year, one week removed from the Indoor Championships.
Davis led the Heidelberg men with an eighth place finish in the men’s high jump. Nate jumped 2.00 meters (6-06.75) in the men’s ‘A’ flight.
For the Heidelberg men’s throwers, Zach Felton (Malvern/Minerva) led the way in the shot put. Felton threw 13.38 meters (45-04.50) at the Shamrock, placing 17th in a field of 72 competitors.
Sophomore Robert Taw placed 20th in the men’s javelin with a toss of 51.97 meters (170-06). The outing was Taw’s first of the year as he did not throw during the indoor season.
The Heidelberg men and women will take the week off to practice hard in preparation of the Ohio Athletic Conference Split Meet on Friday, March 29. The Split Meet will be hosted by Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. The start time for the meet is TBA.
