Second year head coach Briana Hess and the Heidelberg University men’s and women’s track and field team began their 2012-2013 indoor season at the Tiffin University Alumni Grand Opener on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1. The first day featured both men’s and women’s track and field events, while Saturday, the Heidelberg throwers showcased their skills.

Freshman thrower Mary Beth Boyden stole the spotlight at Tiffin University, breaking the school record in weight throw in her first collegiate meet. With a throw of 44-8.25 in the weight throw, Boyden now sits atop the indoor weight throw record at Heidelberg, with her careers still in it’s infancy. The previous record had been held by Megan Gifford who threw 41-5.00 back in 2006.

Boyden tossed 41-6.00 in the shot put to lead the Student Princes.

Returning All-American, Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) placed fourth (17-2.75) in the women’s long jump.

Freshman Nicole Johnson (Ontario) ran in her first collegiate track meet on Friday by competing in the women’s one mile. Johnson clocked a time of 5:57.00, good enough for a third place finish.

Thrower Brittany Tatum (Cleveland/Trinity) was the only female thrower to compete on both Friday and Saturday. Following a heave of 32-5.75 in the shot put on Friday, Tatum tossed 42-0.00 in the weight throw on Saturday.

The Heidelberg men were led by thrower Thomas Norris on Friday. Norris threw 39-4.50 in the shot put and 41-8.75 in the weight throw, earning him a tenth and seventh place finish respectively.

On Saturday, the Heidelberg men were led by Gage Falcone (Fairview) in the shot put and Brett Pickens in the weight throw.

Falcone’s throw of 48-6.75 in the shot put earned him seventh place out of a field of 19 throwers. However, Pickens edged out Falcone in the weight throw with a toss of 40-5.00 compared to Falcone’s 37-6.75.

The duo finished 17th and 18th in the weight throw.

As a team, the Heidelberg men finished in sixth place on Friday, collecting 21 points.

The Heidelberg women placed fifth, in a tie with Tiffin University Alumni with 24 points.

Team score was not recorded on Saturday.

The Heidelberg men’s and women’s track and field squads will take a seven week lay off before traveling to the University of Findlay to compete in the Northwest Ohio Meet on Friday, January 18, 2013.
