Volleyball Gains National Recognition for Success in the Classroom

The Heidelberg College volleyball team continues to rack up the honors for its success in the classroom. The Berg was named as one of 53 NCAA Division III programs to earn the GamePlan/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2006 season.

Helping guide Heidelberg to a path of distinction on and off the court is head coach Jason Miller. Miller feels that “Earning national academic recognition speaks volumes for the quality of student-athletes that are involved with the program. It is something we have been working towards and talking about over the last couple of years. The team really buckled down this past year and worked extremely hard academically to see this goal through. I am very proud of them and excited to call myself their coach.”

The Team Academic Award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

Heidelberg can add its Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award to its Scholar-Athlete Team Award for the fall of 2006. Heidelberg’s Scholar-Athlete Awards Program is made possible by the William E. Landess Fund and the volleyball team topped all Heidelberg fall sports teams.

Heidelberg finished 2006 with an overall record of 22-15 and made its 15th overall trip to the OAC Tournament, including its fifth-straight. In 2006 Heidelberg had its best start in the history of the program, opening the year victorious in 13 of its first 14 matches.
