'Berg Sweeps John Carroll in OAC Action

The Heidelberg College volleyball team utilized a balanced attack in sweeping (30-21, 30-19, 30-17) John Carroll University tonight in Seiberling Gymnasium on the campus of Heidelberg. Heidelberg had three finish the three-game match with double figure kills led by Whitney Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) with 12 and Laurie Patrick (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) and Kelsey Elliott (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) with 11 apiece.

The win extends Heidelberg’s OAC record to 5-0 on the year and its overall mark to 20-5, while John Carroll falls to 1-3 in the OAC and 10-12 overall. Heidelberg is the first OAC institution to reach the 20-win plateau on the year and it is the second-straight year that Heidelberg has posted 20 wins.

In game one, Heidelberg opened up to an early 10-6 lead following a block courtesy of Patrick and Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort). The Berg led by as many as eight at 20-12 before the Blue Streaks began to strike, but Heidelberg kept the charge to a minimum, never allowing JCU to get closer than six points.

Elliott started the scoring in game two with a kill and sealed the game with a solo block sandwiched in the middle of two Patrick kills to help the Berg build a 2-0 advantage in the match.

John Carroll did not give up and took an early lead in the third game, 4-1. The Berg and JCU battled back and forth until a Morgan Magers kill ignited an 8-0 Heidelberg run, shifting the momentum towards the host school. The Berg held a 14-9 lead and never looked back, outscoring JCU 16-8 to earn the OAC victory. Contributing to three of Heidelberg’s last eight points was three kills from Whitney Magers, while Katie Jones (Akron, Ohio / Green) checked into the game and recorded back-to-back kills to give Heidelberg’s its 30 points.

Morgan Magers controlled Heidelberg’s offense, dishing out 41 assists. Handling the Heidelberg defense was Kendra Orwig (Castalia, Ohio / Margaretta) with a match-high 23 digs.
