Volleyball Continues Trek Through OAC Flawless
The Heidelberg College volleyball team continued its trek the Ohio Athletic Conference today with a 3-2 (23-30, 30-27, 27-30, 30-24, 15-10) victory over No. 25 Capital University. The win is Heidelberg’s sixth-straight in the OAC to stand atop the league at 6-0. The six-consecutive wins in OAC action by the Berg ties for its longest conference winning streak, matching the 1986 team. In 1986, Heidelberg went on to win the program’s first and only regular season league title.
Overall, Heidelberg stands at 21-5 on the year, while Capital fell to 17-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. Aside from OAC winning streaks, the Berg also snapped a 13-match slide against the Crusaders.
For the match, Heidelberg continued to utilize its balanced attack, finishing with five hitters with double-digit kills. Leading the way was Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Memorial) with 15. Laurie Patrick (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) was next with 13 followed by Whitney Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) (12), Audra Vucic (Lancaster, Ohio / Fisher Catholic) (11) and Katie Jones (Akron, Ohio / Green) (10). Dishing out a vast majority of the kills on the day was sophomore setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) with 56 assists.
Defensively, Heidelberg was equally impressive, finishing with five players with double-figure digs. Kendra Orwig (Castalia, Ohio / Margaretta) led the way with 30 followed by Morgan Magers with 19. Tracy Sutter (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) tallied 16 digs, while Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) and Kristy Bollenbacher (Huron, Ohio / Huron) had 14 and 12, respectively.
Heidelberg returns to action at Ohio Northern University on Oct. 16. The match with the Polar Bears begins at 7:00 p.m. with sole possession of first place in the league standings up for grabs.
