Volleyball Secures OAC Quarterfinals Match in Tiffin
The Heidelberg College volleyball team, under the guidance of head coach Jason Miller, swept visiting Otterbein College (30-20, 30-19, 30-19) tonight in Seiberling Gymnasium. The win secures Heidelberg a top-four seed in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Following the win Heidelberg sits at 7-1 in league play, with one OAC match remaining. The top-eight teams in the final league standings qualify for the postseason tournament, with the high seed hosting matches throughout.
For the year, Heidelberg continued to add to its 20-win season and now boast 22 wins overall to just eight setbacks. The 22 victories ties for third all-time in the history of the program. The win also improves Heidelberg to 6-0 overall at home on the year. Otterbein fell to 4-25 overall and 1-7 in league play with the loss.
Behind the serving of Tracy Sutter (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) Heidelberg swung a 5-5 game into a 13-5 advantage for the Berg. Otterbein assisted in the scoring spree by Heidelberg, as the Berg only picked up three of its eight points and Otterbein faulted on five points. Otterbein battled back and pulled within five points at 15-10, but back-to-back kills from Whitney Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) and Laurie Patrick (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) surged Heidelberg to the eventual 30-20 game one win.
In game two, Otterbein scored first, but the Berg retook the lead at 2-1 and never looked back. With the score board reading 22-16 in favor of the Student Princes, Heidelberg registered four points off of kills and another four points on Otterbein miscues to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Otterbein scored first in the third game, but Heidelberg bounced right back on the ensuing serve and sailed to the eventual game three 30-19 victory.
For the match, Whitney Magers led the Heidelberg attack game with 10 kills, while Patrick added nine and Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Memorial) eight.
