Volleyball Awarded for Academic Excellence
The 2008 edition of the Heidelberg University volleyball team not only excelled on the court, but in the classroom as well. For the third-consecutive year Heidelberg earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Heidelberg carried a team grade point average of 3.53, under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Jason Miller, and was one of a record-setting 409 teams honored.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year and honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Helping to guide the team to its academic honors was Ohio Athletic Conference Academic First Team selections seniors Kelsey Elliott (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf), Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Memorial) and Audra Vucic (Lancaster, Ohio / Fisher Catholic), along with junior Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort).
Earning a spot on the ESPN the Magazine Academic College Division All-District IV First Team was Magers and sophomore Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted), while Hurlburt and Elliott were third team honorees.
On the court Heidelberg closed out the 2008 season at 31-8, marking a record for wins in a season. It was the third-straight season, and fourth in five years, that Heidelberg has posted at least 20 wins. Within the OAC, Heidelberg was runner-ups in the regular season with an 8-1 mark and finished second in the OAC Tournament. The Berg earned their second-straight trip to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship via an at-large bid and went on to win its quarterfinal match in the Midwest Regional at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
