Volleyball Sweeps Competition, Wins Capital Invitational
With scores of 3-0, 3-0 the Heidelberg volleyball team swept its competition on the second day of the Capital Invitational to take the tournament. On the first day, Heidelberg defeated Westminster College 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22) and DePauw University 3-2 (25-19, 16-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-6). With a win over Otterbein College (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) in the morning, Heidelberg earned a spot in the championship game versus invitational host Capital University, whom they defeated 25-21, 25-8, 25-19.
The Berg improves its record to 4-0 on the year.
For the weekend, Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Memorial) smashed 41 kills, while Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) contributed 29 and Audra Vucic (Lancaster, Ohio / Lancaster) put down 24. Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) led the team with 62 digs. Meanwhile, Reinhart showed how well she could play both sides of the ball by adding 60 more to the team’s weekend total. Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) gave the team 146 assists throughout the competition.
Magers and Reinhart also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
“Obviously I am extremely happy to go 4-0 on the weekend,” commented head coach Jason Miller, “Our young kids grew up a lot this weekend. Morgan and Jackie played really solid as well. If we continue to grow like we did this weekend, by the end of the season we will be a tough team to beat.”
Heidelberg hits the court again on Tuesday, September 2, across town at Tiffin University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
