Hurlburt and Magers Tabbed AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the 28th annual Division III All-American Teams. Heidelberg University’s Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Memorial) and Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) were tabbed AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans. 2008 marks the first season that Heidelberg has had an All-American.

Hurlburt and Magers earned a spot on the All-American ballot following being voted to the Great Lakes Region First Team. Their spots on the first were also a first at the Berg and the two honorees were the first all-region recognition the Berg has received since 2004.

Hurlburt’s All-American honor caps off the 2008 season and a successful four-year playing career that saw her earn a spot on the Ohio Athletic Conference First Team, the Academic All-OAC Team, the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team and the ESPN the Magazine Academic College District IV Third Team, along with nods on a variety of all-tournament teams. She closed out her final season as just the fourth player at the Berg to record 1,000 kills and stands second all-time with 1,180. In 2008 she led the team with 458 kills, a .369 attack percentage and 117 blocks. Her 458 kills ranks fourth in the single-season record book, while her 117 blocks increases her career total to 368, which stands fourth.

Magers ran the Berg offense for the third-straight season in 2008 and closed out the year with numerous accolades and record marks. Her All-American nod is added to her All-OAC First Team and Academic All-OAC nods, as well as her ESPN the Magazine Academic College District IV First Team honors. She dished out a team-leading 1,429 assists on the year, which stands second in the single-season record book. In mid October Magers topped the career record for assists and now has 4,267 to her credit over the course of the last three years. She amassed 360 digs in 2008, which increases her career total to 1,009, ranking 10th all-time, and she was just the 12th player to ever eclipse 1,000 digs at the Berg.

Under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Jason Miller, Heidelberg closed out the 2008 season at 31-8, marking a record for wins in a season. It was the third-straight season, and fourth in five years, that Heidelberg has posted at least 20 wins. Within the OAC, Heidelberg was runner-ups in the regular season with an 8-1 mark and finished second in the OAC Tournament. The Berg earned their second-straight trip to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship via an at-large bid and went on to win its quarterfinal match in the Midwest Regional at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
