Heidelberg Finishes 2-2 at ONU Invite

Ada, Ohio – September 5, 2009 – The Heidelberg University volleyball team posted a 2-2 record at the Ohio Northern Invitational Sept. 4-5 hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Representing the Berg on the All-Tournament team was senior setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort). Following the invitational Heidelberg stands at 3-2 overall.
 
The weekend opened with a straight-set loss to the host Polar Bears (25-18, 25-14, 25-22). ONU entered the match ranked sixth in the nation. Heidelberg bounced back to even its record at 1-1 with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20) win over No. 8 Southwestern (Texas). Its victory over Southwestern avenged a loss a year ago in Texas.
 
Day two of action for the Berg began with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22) victory over Thomas More and it closed with a hard fought 3-2 (27-25, 18-25, 26-24, 12-25, 15-8) setback to No. 16 Calvin.
 
Leading the way against the Polar Bears was Amanda Atchison (Frankfort, Ohio / Frankfort Adena). Atchison tied her career-high of 15 kills. She recorded 15 kills in 28 attempts, with just two errors for a .464 attack percentage. Magers dished out 30 assists. Defensively Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) led four with double digit digs with 18.
 
In its win over Southwestern, Atchison once again dominated at the net, recording another career-best 15 kills. Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Haase added 13 kills. Magers tallied 49 assists and Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) led the way with 22 digs.
 
Against Thomas More, Atchison recorded 10 kills, while Haase and Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) contributed nine and seven kills, respectively. Magers set Heidelberg’s hitters for 37 kills. The back row was led by Donelan’s 13 digs.
 
In the final match of the invitational, Reinhart picked up a double-double consisting of 13 kills and 22 digs. Joining Reinhart with 13 kills apiece was Bevington, marking a career-best, and Atchison. Donelan finished with 39 digs and Bevington had five block assists.
