Heidelberg Headed to Championship Match

Rochester, N.Y. – September 12, 2009 – A 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-20) win over New York University secured a spot for the Heidelberg University volleyball team in the championship match of the 2009 Golden Flyer Tournament hosted by Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.
 
The Berg finished pool B play with a 3-0 mark and will face the winner of pool A in the championship match today at 4:00 p.m.
 
Set one versus NYU featured a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than three points, until the Violets rattled off five-straight points to break a 20-20 tie and win the set 25-20.
 
Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) started set two with a kill for the Berg and they never looked back en route to an eventual 25-18 win to even the match at a set apiece.
 
Heidelberg took a 2-1 set advantage over NYU following a 25-13 win in set three. A 9-1 run midway through the set tripled Heidelberg’s score and sent them into the winner’s column.
 
Set four saw the Berg take charge early and built a 10-point advantage at 20-10. NYU did not quit and pulled within three, 23-20. A NYU attack error and a Haase kill sealed a 25-20 set win and match victory.
 
Leading Heidelberg’s offense was Haase with 10 kills, to go along with three service aces. Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) and Jackie Reinhart (New Reigel, Ohio / New Riegel) added nine and eight kills, respectively. Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) dished out 37 assists, while adding 14 digs on defense to post a double-double.
 
Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) had a team-high 25 digs and Reinhart finished with 17.
