Magers Reaches Milestone in 'Berg Win

Tiffin, Ohio – September 30, 2009 – Senior All-American setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) dished out 39 assists to eclipse 5,000 assists for her career  as the  the nationally-ranked Heidelberg University volleyball team swept Marietta College (26-24, 25-9, 25-22) tonight, Sept. 30, in Seiberling Gymnasium.
 
The win also extended Heidelberg’s home winning streak to 18 matches, while improving its overall mark to 16-4. Against Ohio Athletic Conference foes, the Berg has opened the year at 2-0. The Pioneers fall to 13-6 and 0-1.
 
Magers has 5,002 assists to her credit over the course of her career, which marks the first player in the history of the Heidelberg program to reach the 5,000 assist plateau. Within the OAC, Magers is just the third player ever to accomplish the feat and is the first since Erika Roof of Ohio Northern University finished out her career during the 2005 season.
 
On Tuesday, Heidelberg found itself ranked 25th in the nation according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Over the course of the last few years, Heidelberg has received votes in the national poll, but this week marked the first time every that the Berg has been ranked for its play on the volleyball court.
 
Fellow classmate and middle hitter Amanda Atchison (Frankfort, Ohio / Frankfort Adena) was a focal point for Magers and the Berg offense. Atchison finished with a match-high 15 kills, while Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) followed with 13. Haase added 12 digs for a double-double, to go along with two service aces. Also contributing to Heidelberg’s attack was freshmen Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) and Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) with eight and six kills, respectively.
 
Jackie Reinhart (New Reigel, Ohio / New Riegel) served up three aces in the winning effort.
 
Leading the back row was Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) with 19 digs and Suzy Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) had nine.
 
Heidelberg continues a five-match home stand with Muskingum University on Saturday. Match is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
