Heidelberg Gains Sole Possession of First
Bexley, Ohio – October 17, 2008 – The Heidelberg University volleyball team swept host Capital University (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) today, October 17, in a battle for the top spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. Both institutions entered the match with unblemished league marks. Following the win Heidelberg improved to 21-4 overall and 6-0 in the OAC, while the Crusaders fall to 15-10 and 4-1.
Heidelberg has three league contests remaining, all of which are road matches, in its quest for the program’s second regular season title in the history of the program. Also on the minds of all OAC schools as the regular season nears a close is a spot in the OAC Tournament. The top-six teams in the final regular season standings earn a spot in the postseason tournament. The top-three seeds earn a quarterfinal home match and the highest remaining seed hosts a final four tournament.
Leading two with double-doubles in the win was current OAC Player of the Week Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio /Miamisburg). Haase posted her sixth-consecutive double-double finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs. Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) had 33 assists and 10 digs for a double-double.
Leading all hitters was Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Reigel) with 13 kills, to go along with eight digs and two service aces. Amanda Atchison (Frankfort, Ohio / Frankfort Adena) made it three with double digit kills, registering 10.
At the net Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) had five block assists followed by Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) with four. In the back row, Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) led the Berg with 16 digs.
Next up for the Berg is an OAC contest at John Carroll University on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The Berg will then close out its home schedule when it entertains national powers Wittenberg University, Carthage College and Webster College over homecoming weekend Oct. 23-24.
