'Berg Wins OAC Regular Season Title
Alliance, Ohio – October 31, 2009 – Under the guidance of 10th-year head coach Jason Miller and assistant Kiara Ruffing, the 2009 edition of the Heidelberg University volleyball team added an Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship to its resume following a 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-15, 14-25, 15-11) victory over host Mount Union College. The win secured an 8-1 record in league action and will bring to Tiffin the program’s second regular season title. The championship joins its 1986 trophy. Heidelberg unseated Ohio Northern University who has won the last three-straight regular season championships.
The championship earns the Berg the top seed in next week’s OAC Tournament and home court advantage throughout the eight-team tournament. Heidelberg will host no. 6 seeded Muskingum University in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
Heidelberg concludes the regular season ranked 17th in the nation and boast an overall record of 25-6. The 25 wins ranks fourth all-time. Mount Union closed out the regular season at 21-5 and 7-2.
Leading the way to the title was four players with double figure kills led by a career-best 18 from senior Amanda Atchison (Frankfort, Ohio / Frankfort Adena). Junior Veness Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) finished with 15 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, followed by freshmen Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) and Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Joining Haase with a double-double was senior All-American setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort). Magers dished out 54 assists and had 13 digs.
Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio /North Olmsted) led the back row with 26 digs, while Suzy Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) and Jackie Reinhart (New Reigel, Ohio / New Reigel) had 14 apiece. At the net, Jackie Street had five blocks, while Bevington finished with two.
