Magers and Donelan Tabbed All-Americans

Tiffin, Ohio – November 20, 2009 – The nationally-ranked Heidelberg University volleyball team had two representatives on the 2009 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Team. Earning AVCA All-American Second Team honors was senior setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort), while junior libero Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) was tabbed a third team All-American.

Magers and Donelan increases Heidelberg’s All-American total to four, which is led by two-time honoree Magers. Heidelberg’s presence in the national scene has increased over the course of 10-year head coach Jason Miller’s tenure, especially in the last three seasons which has seen the Berg make three-straight appearances in the NCAA Regionals, and the team broke into the national rankings this season.

The honorees were announced on Wednesday in University Heights, Ohio prior to the start of the 2009 NCAA Volleyball National Quarterfinals. John Carroll University is the host institution for the national championships. A total of 42 student-athletes were honored as All-Americans in 2009 to make up the 29th class. The honorees were voted on by the AVCA Division III All-America committee.

Aside from graduating as a two-time All-American, Magers’ resume consists of two Great Lakes Region First Team honors, three All-OAC selections, including two first team nods, as well as numerous All-Tournament accolades and OAC Player of the Week awards. Not to be outdone, Magers devotes even more of her time to her studies, as she is a two-time ESPN the Magazine All-District IV First Team recipient and has been voted to the Academic All-OAC First Team twice. She owns the Heidelberg career record for assists at 5,639 and her single-season assist totals hold down the top-four single-season marks. Not only did she set up the offense, but she contributed 124 career service aces, which stands sixth all-time. She also had a strong presence on defense and is one of 13 in the history of the program to record 1,000 digs. Magers finished her career with 1,313, which ranks fourth in the career record book.

In just three seasons, Donelan has emerged into a mainstay in Heidelberg’s back row. Not only does she have a solid stance on defense, but she has contributed greatly with her serving and with her dedication in the classroom as well. For her hard work Donelan is earning her first All-American honor of her career, and it joins her two OAC Libero of the Year honors, her two All-OAC Second Team nods, as well as her two Great Lakes Region selections. Academically Donelan has been recognized twice on the ESPN the Magazine All-District IV team and earned a spot in this year’s Academic All-OAC First Team. In each of her last two years, she has led the team in digs. Her 827 from 2008 stands second all-time, while her 689 from this season ranks fourth. For her career she has moved into second all-time with 1,914. She will look to become just the second player at the Berg to eclipse 2,000 digs for her career.

The 2009 season concluded for Heidelberg in the NCAA Regional Quarterfinals at Hope College with an overall record of 27-8. The 27 wins ties for second all-time for wins in a season. En route to its 27 wins, Heidelberg claimed the program’s second, first outright, OAC Regular Season Title and earned the right to host the OAC Tournament.
