Athletic Training Candidate Admission

Overview:

Heidelberg's ATEP is definitely in a growth stage. In the past few years, we have seen a significant increase in applicants as the program continues to grow in staff size, curriculum, and clinical opportunities!  Like many other ATEP's, acceptance into Heidelberg's ATEP is competitive and selective based on specific application standards (see below).  For more details regarding the ATEP view the AT Student Handbook.

Candidate Status

Students may declare themselves Athletic Training Candidates upon admission to Heidelberg.  An Athletic Training Candidate does not become an Athletic Training major until he/she has been formally admitted to the ATEP. Athletic Training Candidates must complete the application standards for the program, as listed below. Completion of these standards does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Once the Athletic Training Candidate has completed the application standards, he/she may submit the formal application to the ATEP Director for consideration. All applications are due by April 1. Upon completion of the formal application, the Athletic Training Candidate will be asked to interview with the ATEP Selection Committee. During the interview, each member of the ATEP Selection Committee will complete a scoring scale evaluating candidates on intellectual, social and technical skills relative to the athletic training profession.

All components of the application process are individually weighted and scored. Individual scores are incorporated into a cumulative score that determines the candidate's rank. This process makes the process as objective and non-discriminatory as possible.  A minimum rank score of 80 percent is necessary for admittance. Enrollment in the ATEP is typically limited to twelve studetns per academic year to maintain the mandated 8:1 Instructor to student ratio. Therefore, students ranking among the top twelve candidates by the ATEP selection committee will earn admittance into the ATEP.

The ATEP Director reserves the right to institute an “Ability to Benefit Policy” in unique situations. This policy allows an AT candidate to be considered for entry into the ATEP if:

(a) An AT candidate does not meet all ATEP Application requirements because of some unusual and/or extenuating circumstances which may have potentially affected their application process.

(b) There are more than 12 qualified AT candidates that have completed the ATEP Application, the ATEP Director may admit more than 12 candidates if the ATEP is able to maintain the required 8:1 students to faculty ratio.

Admission

Final admission into the program rests with the decision of the ATEP Selection Committee. The Athletic Training Candidate will receive the admission decision in writing by May 15.  Admission decisions are one of three options 1) Candidate is not admitted 2) Candidate is fully admitted, or 3) Candidate is admitted on a probationary basis based on specific deficits and/or concerns related to their application.

Athletic Training Candidates who were denied admission into the ATEP will have the opportunity to reapply.  The reapplication process includes completing an additional 75 hours of observation, submitting an updated formal application and achieving the minimum rank score necessary for admittance.

 ATEP Related Fees

Initiating and continuing enrollment in the ATEP requires the student to pay for a number of program-specific fees, appropriate clinical attire as indicated by the ATEP, professional dues and memberships (seniors only), travel to and from clinical sites and off campus events associated with the ATEP, and other associated expenses which typically total $500 or more over the duration of the program.  Students are advised to budget accordingly.
