ATEP Admissions Standards

Overview:

Heidelberg's ATEP is definitely in a growth stage.  We currently have less than twenty students but have seen a significant increase in applicants as the program continues to grow in staff size, curriculum, and clinical opportunities!

Acceptance into Heidelberg's Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is competitive and selective. Students may declare themselves Athletic Training Candidates upon admission to Heidelberg. An Athletic Training Candidate does not become an Athletic Training major until he/she has been formally admitted to the ATEP. Athletic Training Candidates must complete the application standards for the program, as listed below. Completion of these standards does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Once the Athletic Training Candidate has completed the application standards, he/she may submit the formal application to the ATEP Director for consideration. All applications are due by April 1. Upon completion of the formal application, the Athletic Training Candidate will be asked to interview with the ATEP Selection Committee. During the interview, each member of the ATEP Selection Committee will complete a scoring scale. Athletic Training Candidates will also be required to take both practical and written examinations to assess their clinical skills and knowledge. Athletic Training Candidates will be evaluated on intellectual, social and technical skills relative to the athletic training profession.

All components of the application process are individually weighted and scored. Individual scores are incorporated into a cumulative score that determines the candidate's rank. A minimum rank score of 80 percent is necessary for admittance. Enrollment in the ATEP is limited to twelve per academic year. Therefore, students must rank among the top twelve candidates to earn admittance into the ATEP. The ATEP has an Ability to Benefit Policy. The policy allows a candidate to be considered for entry into the ATEP despite not meeting all requirements because of unusual and/or extenuating circumstances that may have potentially affected his/her application process. The Ability to Benefit Policy only applies when twelve Athletic Training Candidates have not been admitted for that academic year. Final admission into the program rests with the decision of the ATEP Selection Committee. The Athletic Training Candidate will receive the admission decision in writing by May 15.

Athletic Training Candidates who were denied admission into the ATEP will have the opportunity to reapply. The reapplication process includes completing an additional 75 hours of observation, submitting an updated formal application and achieving the minimum rank score necessary for admittance.
