AT Department News and Notes
NEWS FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK:
ATEP MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS AT THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON: ROUND TWO!
For the second year in a row, the Heidelberg Athletic Training Education Program was the only out of state medical volunteers at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon at the world famous Grant Park in downtown Chicago, Illinois on October 11, 2009. The event was attended by two AT faculty: Trevor Bates (Director & Chair) and Katsumi Takeno (Instructor & Clinical AT), and nine AT students, Elizabeth Davis (SR), Elizabeth Cantley(JR), Nicole Bachman(JR), Katherine Klein(JR), Ashley Klaco(JR), Melissa Hamons(JR), Nathan James (JR), and James Wachter (SO/JR), and Kristin Burns (SO).
We arrived on site at the Balbo Medical Tent 1 at 4:15am Sunday morning, and the day ended for us at 3:00pm. This year, our group of medical volunteer returners (all but three students) were given a special assignment to provide emergency medical assistance to 45,000 registered runners from all over the world as they were coming down the home stretch (final 200 meters) between the last aid station on the course and the finish line. Unfortunately, some runners made it 26 miles of the 26.2 mile race and could go no farther, and our group was there to help! We were called the Medical Volunteer Sweep Team, which consisted of professionals (RN, AT, PT, OT, MD, etc) and students from various disciplines of the medical and allied heath care fields. Our group also rotated to assisted with athletes in the 100 meter area AFTER the finish line up to the Balbo Medical Tent 1, which is where we saw the most action! Our job was to quickly assess and treat the runners with the appropriate care and to decide whether or not they needed further medical attention in one of the well equipped medical tent areas. Our ATEP students were paired with eachother and were assisted by the myriad of professionals alongside them based on the needs of the particular patients they encountered. As ATEP Director, I was extremely proud of our AT students as they performed at a high level and were confident in their abilities to deal with the various patient care situations that we encountered.
One thing that we found to be quite interesting was that all 911 calls in the city of Chicago for the day were routed from Balbo Medical Tent 1, because a large majority of the ambulance and EMS vehicles in the city were stationed along the marathon course for the day! So if we needed to get emergency help, we could just dial 911 and let them know which section of the race we were located in and they could get the EMS to the site in minutes! Another interesting fact, we participated in making a total of 30,000 ice bags that were given to the runners in addition to thousands of bananas, pretzels, water, gatorade, and beer(!) after the finish line.
After the race, we went back to our hotel to clean up and rest for a while and then the fun continued. We out to dinner at Giordano's Restaurant for some world famous Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza. After the gorging of magnanimous amount of pizza that required lots of mastication, we decided to burn off some calories with a little friendly bowling outing. Of course the score will remain confidential to protect the innocent, but if you really know ask me!
Special thank you to:
Mr. Tyrone Bates Sr., Chicago PD Sargent & my dad, for getting up way too early to provide travel for the group to and from the marathon, saving us lots of money and headaches trying to find a parking place in downtown Chicago on race day!
Mr. Joseph Albin and Mr. Mario Sullivan, two gentlemen that dare call Mr. Bates a friend) for providing the guidance for the evening festivities and entertaining us with their bowling skills.
Mr. Andrew Lundgren, Sweep Team Coordinator, for providing outstanding organization of the Medical Sweep Team volunteers and taking good care of all of us throughout the grueling day of "windy city" weather.
Dr. George Chiampas, Medical Director for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, for his leadership and re-invitation to the Heidelberg ATEP to be a part of the Chicago Marathon Medical Volunteer Group. He was by far the busiest person at the event from our vantage point!
Dr. David Weininger, Heidelberg Provost & VPAA, for providing continued support for the ATEP to attend this annual event that allows our students to get the exposure that our mission so appropriately calls for.
Last but not least the Heidelberg ATEP students and faculty that held down the fort while we were away.
Mr. Bates

ATEP Director Returns from CHINA!
Wow, what a month. As a part of the Heidelberg University - Tianjin Normal University Exchange Program, I was able to spend the month of July in Beijing and Tianjin, China. It was one of the most amazing professional experiences of my career up to this point...other than joining the ranks of the Heidelberg faculty of course (smile). The program included myself, Samira Risheg, Mohommed Risheg, Brad Modlin, Jodi Richardson, Mel Cassler, and Jim Hagemeyer (team leader) and two students Emily Hall and Zaia Thombre. We all experienced the rich history and culture of the Chinese people and impressed at every turn. We taught in a Conversational English Program aimed at improving the speaking, writing, and comprehension of Chinese teachers and professionals. Each professor taught their own class of students which varied from highly functional speakers to those that required more basic instruction. The two students rotated between classes assisting with thier own prepared presentations and assing the professor with the activiites of the day. I taught Class A, which turned out to be the most proficient speakers of English and I quickly learned that I had a tough challenge on my hands! My students were attentive, eager, respectful, and dutiful about every task they were given and they gave their best effort for event the simplest assignments and activities. In retrospect I told my students that I could only hope that I gave them a portion of the knowledge that they gave me. In additional to a myriad of professional triumphs, each of the group members was able to experience the real people and culture outside of what was setup for the traditional tourist to experience. Our students welcomed us with open arms and we quickly developed strong and long lasting relationships with many of them. My fondest memories are not just from the classroom success of my students but also the laughs and conversations that we shared at lunches, on planned outings or over dinner with their families. I could go on and on about this experience because of how profoundly productive I found it to be on so many levels. My energy and passion for teaching and helping students to achieve their potential has been intensified by this experience and I hope that my Heidelberg students are ready for me!

2008-2009 Alumni Survey Responses
We wanted to take a moment to thank all of the Heidelberg Alumni that have already taken the time to fill out the alumni survey that was sent out in the fall. For those that have not yet sent the survey back please do as they are very important to our overall assessment of the program. We want you all to know that you should expect to receive the "revived" copy of the ATEP Alumni News Letter in March (National Athletic Training Month). I must mention that we received a special gift from one alumni of a red Heidelberg Athletic Training pull over jacket and an orange AT long sleeve shirt that are from her days as an AT student at Heidelberg. I use these items as a testament of our alumni reaching back to keep in touch when speaking with our AT candidates and prospective Heidelberg students. Finally, I invite any and all alumni to visit or call if you have questions, comments, treasures, or talents that you wish to share with us we would be more than willing to take the time to listen. Thanks for caring,
Mr. Bates

New Medical Terminology Course!
It was not genius by any means but the ATEP faculty collaboratively decided that we were under-preparing our incoming sophomore students to integrate into the culture of the program. This is a significant point to make because of the word "collaboratively" and I must give credit to the new and newer faculty and students for instantly finding ways to add to the ATEP. So via various discussions and debates (both student and faculty input considered), we have successfully added a freshman level medical terminology course, the course will also be made available retroactive for interested upper class students. We believe the course will tremendously aid incoming students as the dive into writing, reading, and orally communicating within the medical field that can seem like a whole other language...because it is! We have also added a freshman level competency booklet that exposes candidates to basic stretching principles and techniques, taping proficiencies and other relating psycho-motor skills. Our intent is to aid them as the plunge into the unknown that if successful as candidates will become their sophomore year as an Athletic Training Student and beyond.

2009 Myokinematic Dysfunction Seminar;
I wanted to take a moment to thank the group (Trevor Bates, Jerry Bean, Ashley L., Katherine K., Elizabeth C., Melissa H., Audra C., Nathan J., Elizabeth D., and Nicole B.) that attended the Myokinematic Dysfunction Seminar today at the University of Findlay. We were invited by a very good friend of the program, Mr. Kevin Lewis, ATC, and I truly appreciate his professional involvement with the ATEP. I also want you all to be aware that we have been well supported by the Dean (Dr. David Weininger) in making this and other vital professional events (including the Chicago Marathon Medical Volunteer Event and the OATA Student Workshop and Quiz Bowl).
Today's seminar was complex in that it integrated many concepts that ATEP students either have or will learn in the your undergraduate level education at Heidelberg University. I was very proud of our students for asking intelligent questions, being attentive, and holding your ground alongside the University of Findlay Graduate Athletic Training students.
I fully expect that each and every ATEP students will continue to seek out opportunities to expand what you know, what you can do, and who/what you will become as you discover yourself in a distinguishing way. Today was a great experience both educationally and for networking.
Three things that I took away from today in addition to the course material were:
1) We were able to establish a professionally relationship with the Graduate AT Faculty and students at the University of Findlay
2) The seminar speakers and distinguished guests were Certified Athletic Trainers associated with the Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball Organization and the Denver Broncos Football Organization.
3) As a result of the first above points, we have opened another door that one of you someday may walk through via the professional networking that has begun and that we will work hard to build upon.
Thank you,
Mr. Bates

2009 OATA Student Workshop and Quiz Bowl
For the second year in a row a group of AT Students (Ashley Klaco, Melissa Hamons, Katherine Klein, Ashley Long, Audra Cleveland, Nicole Bachman, Elizabeth Cantley, and Caitlyn Bromley ) and two faculty (Jerry Bean and Trevor Bates)and our certified GA (Ashley Stambolis) made the trip to the OATA Student Workshop. Unlike last year, this year we were the first group there by a long shot! The quiz bowl team, Ronda Riffle, Jared Ruffing, Elizabeth Davis, was competitive and gave the big boys and Ohio State all they could handle. The overall victors were our friends at Wilmington College and we wish them well at the GLATA Quiz Bowl. The workshop content included several presentations, two of which sparked more discussion including political activism in athletic training and it's importance, and up close view of a Major League Soccer ATC.
We are excited about the quiz bowl for next year because we will likely be the only team that remains fully in tact and our students have gained more confidence in what they know via answering questions from the various categories within all five of the rounds of the quiz bowl.
Before it is all said and done, Heidelberg will bring home the gold!
Go Berg,
Mr. Bates

2008 BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON - MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS
(REAR: Katie Klein, *Kastumi Takeno, ATC (ATEP Instructor) & Megan Richardson; CENTER: Frank Dudzik, Elizabeth Davis, Melissa Hamons, *Original Medical Director*, Nicole Bachman, Trevor Bates, ATC (ATEP Director), & Elizabeth Cantley; FRONT: Ashley Long & Ashley Klaco)
In the picture above, Heidelberg Athletic Training Students, along with Director Trevor Bates and Instructor Katusmi Takeno, proudly huddle around the original Medical Director of the Chicago Marathon that took place 31 years ago!
Whirlwind....this is the best way to describe the mid-October weekend trip to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). The group served as Medical Volunteers for the event that boasted 45,000 runners in the 31st annual traditional 26.2 mile race through the "windy city" of Chicago. Arriving the city of Chicago at 9:30 p.m., the group took a driving tour through downtown before heading to bed for the long day ahead. The Athletic Training group arrived at the world famous Grant Park in downtown Chicago at 4:45 a.m. where they received a host of free Nike gear, including the dry-fit hats and jackets that they are sporting in the picture above.
The weather was unseasonably hot with a light breeze, which made the event ripe with the type of injuries, illnesses, and conditions that the Athletic Training Students spend every day preparing for both academically and clinically. The Heidelberg Athletic Training group was the only out-of-state academic medical volunteer group that joined hundreds of other medical professionals, including (but not limited to) doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and paramedics. The athletes ranged from world elite, collegiate, recreational and even a spattering of athletes with physical disabilities in racing wheelchairs with finishing times between just over two hours and beyond eight hours! Spectators described the finish line area as "organized mass chaos" as it related to the various efforts to care for the thousands of runners that poured through for hours.
The finish line and 400 yards beyond was the designated area that Certified Athletic Trainers along with hundreds of athletic training students from several CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Programs provided care for a steady stream of runners from around the country and around the world. The care they provided to the marathoners included anything from treating minor injuries to assisting with the treatment of athletes with severe respiratory (lungs), cardiac (heart), or neuro-muscular (nerves & muscles) dysfunction as a result of the stress placed on their bodies throughout the race.
High-fives, hugs, tears, and most often "Thank You" was the phrase that the Athletic Training group heard so many times from that athletes they had the honor to provide care for. The race ended at approximately 4 p.m., and the group spent some time relaxing near a fountain in the Grant Park along the "Magnificent Mile" of Michigan Avenue.
After working hard the group took to the infamous "Lou Manati's Pizzeria" for some Chicago style deep dish pizza. The group was joined for dinner by Mr. Bates' friend, fellow-alum (Millikin University) & colleague, Joseph Albin, who is an ACE certified personal trainer and President of Mayhem Promotions Inc. Finally the group played hard at Game Works, which is a two-story dream-land for video gamers and sports enthusiasts.
Serving as medical volunteers for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon was extremely productive in providing Heidelberg Athletic Training Students & Faculty firsthand exposure to emergency medicine on a grand scale. Under the supervision of the faculty, these Heidelberg athletic training students were able to turn their academic knowledge into functional skills that helped real people.
The group would like to Thank: Dr. David Weininger, Sr. VPAA & Dean of the College (Heidelberg), for his support of this outing; Dr. George Chiampas (Chicago Marathon Medical Director) and Mr. Andrew Lundgren, MS, ATC (North Park University) for their direction and enthusiasm; Mr. Tyrone Bates Sr. (Chicago Police Sergeant & Mr. Bates' dad) for assisting with travel arrangements to and from the event; and Mr. Joseph Albin for his role in ensuring that the trip was not all work and no play.
Go Berg!

NEW FACES:
We would like to welcome two of the newest members of the Heidelberg Athletic Training Department: Ashley Stambolis (Graduate Assistant) & Katsumi Takeno, ATC (Assistant AT and Instructor). In addition to being a Certified Athletic Trainer, Katsumi Takeno has an extremely high sports IQ as a former semi-professional athlete (former tri-athlete). Ashley joins us from the University of Maine and has been a breath of fresh air for the department and a great help with administrative tasks as well as the football team. We are excited about the positive energy, knowledge, skill, and diversity that both of our new members bring to the department. It is also worth noting that Jerry Bean, Head Athletic Trainer, is beginning his first full year since coming to Heidelberg in January 2008.
In addition to new faculty, Heidelberg has also been fortunate to have new physicians join the Stoner Health Center and Athletic Training Department. Dr. Sears, Dr. Akers, and Dr. Copeland will serve the medical needs of the Heidelberg students and student-athletes. In addition to serving medical needs, Dr. Copeland will also serve as the Medical Director of Athletic Training. We are more than excited to have them all join the BERG!

PROGRESS:
As we prepare with renewed energy for the return of our junior and senior athletic training students and the invocation of the new sophomore class, I look back on the year past (07-08) at how we have all grown with great humility. Most importantly, I can emphatically and proudly say that as a department we are in a better position today than we were one year ago when I arrived at Heidelberg. I expect to be able to say this every year, which means we have our work cut out for us this year, but we are surely up to the task!
Allow me to provide just a few successes that we have accomplished in the past year:
1) We will have a larger staff, including new head athletic trainer and graduate assistant positions, while most of last year we were understaffed.
2) We have a great incoming sophomore class of students (10) that have great promise, in addition to nearly 50 candidates for this year that will complete an updated online application on this very website.
3) We have a few small additions to the AT Facilities, including an Upper Body Ergometer, Hydrocollator, Game Ready compression unit, new black table coverings for both the ATR and Rehab Rooms, new whirlpool table tops, new text books in our student resource area......and the list goes on.
4) We have added two new ATR courses: a Taping Lab for sophomores and a Strength and Conditioning course for junior level students.
5) We have a new Medical Director of Athletic Training, Steven Copeland MD, and two new Stoner Health Center / Team Physicians, Dr. Sears and Dr. Akers. With these personnel changes we are developing new policies that will prove very beneficial to the ATEP, including potentially performing athletic physicals on campus and using MD offices and new clinical education sites. We would like to express great thanks to James Anthony, MD, Rudy Vela, MD, and John Vela, MD, for their many years of excellent service to Heidelberg.
6) We have a few new ACIs and our CEC is effectively utilizing our clinical sites to ensure that our students will obtain a thorough and diverse education that will prepare them for a career in a multitude of settings. We would like to thank Latessa Tillinghast and Kevin Lewis for their years of service to the ATEP as ACIs (and so much more) and wish them well in their new positions respectively.
7) We have great positive faculty chemistry as a department and are continually working hard to build great relationships with other departments on campus. I would like to personally thank former AT faculty that I had the pleasure to work with - Laura Kunkel and Karen Keenan - for their service to the AT Department and wish them great heights in their new positions.
8) Perhaps most importantly, the ATR curriculum has been updated to address the newest version of the BOC Exam, NATA competencies, and CAATE standards as we prepare for re-accreditation and our site visit in the Fall of 2009.
With the strong support of the administration, particularly Dr. David Weininger, Senior VPAA and Dean, and the hard work of the ATR faculty (past and present), we have made great strides and are proud of what we have accomplished in the past year.
Mr. Bates
